Day 11: Visit to Erlangen and Bamburg, and birthday celebrations!

Ayooo! It’s your birthday boy back again. (This is Isaac using Ben’s account because we had trouble posting on my account) The big T-raynor turning the big two-oh! And lemme just say; there’s nothing better than spending your birthday in Germany with your mathematician squad. Today we started off with a light birthday breakfast as we mentally prepared for the big DEI discussion! Perchance. But little did I know, I would be flabbergasted as the mighty Jill Dietz would surprise me with a German candle. perchance. and chocolate! Everyone enthusiastically broke out into song to sing me a wonderful happy birthday. Y’all should’ve heard the harmonies out of my math squad, it was truly something special! Above is me with my birthday candle!

We then moved to board the Isaac Train, perchance. where I would then start drafting this post. We arrived in Erlangen, and then visited the home of Emmy Noether. After taking a jolly group photo, we split for a bit to get a bite to eat. Jill bought herself a brand new backpack, as I took the opportunity to try my birthday chocolate. LOL. Anyways, here’s our group photo in front of Emmy Noether’s home :

Getting back on the Isaac Train, we ventured to Bamburg. David took this time to tell me his favorite number was 42. I then asked him why, and he replied with, “because it’s a multiple of 6 and 7” as he alternated raising his left and right hands in perpetuating motion. Giving us a good ol jolly laugh, we then discussed our favorite candy bars. Between Marit and Rachael, there was a commonality in their liking of peppermint. I on the other hand, have no desire for it.

We finally arrived in Bamburg! Some of us stretched those sore legs from running yesterday to venture to the mighty chapels. The Zurich group stopped at a bakery for a bite to eat, while the others and me followed our fearless leader Professor Dietz! Here’s us walking, and a funny face from Ben:

Moving on, after trudging over slippery ice, steep hills, and narrow streets, we made it to the big chapel. While on the way we passed over some bridges, where Ande pulled her signature move and told everyone to hold still and smile at the camera. I personally thought this was a nice photo of us on the bridge :). And shoutout to Sasha who took a great picture of Jill and Ande, our mighty chaperones and overall role models of life and the pursuit of happiness. Sigh. (Just kidding! No sigh, just lots of love to go around!)
I now show you the insides of chapel number 1 (left) and chapel number 2 (right). As our group walked up the street to the biggest chapel, we crossover met up with Grace and Beck! It was a pleasant surprise as we all ventured in to see the fascinations. On towards our chapel adventures, we stopped at small shop selling pottery, sculpted dishes, and much more artistic designs all handmade. While most of us took a look and proceeded to move on, one man… the goat himself… decided to stay and buy a plate for his grandmother… yes it was John. While everyone was walking, me, David and Ben frantically tried to get John to hurry up, but he refused to budge. He took his time talking to the owner and buying his damn plate. Meanwhile me and Ben were coordinating eyesight points to ensure we wouldn’t leave John behind… anyways shout-out to John.

Can you believe we’re only halfway through the day! I couldn’t believe it myself, I was already having a blast before the real birthday celebrations began. Most of us took the 2:49 Isaac Train back to Nuremberg, where I believe most of us would rest for the time being. Not me though. Lemme remark to all, that I had a reservation to confirm! See as a way to get the total number of people for my reservation, I sent a message for people to like. But SOME PEOPLE cough cough Jasper Sasha Ben forgor to reply, anyways I made my way to the Sky Bar and confirmed the reservation for 11 of us, despite 14 of us wanting to go. Here’s a photo of us seated on my birthday! (And yes, shout-out to Marit for suggesting the place)

Sky Bar, a place that had delicious drinks suggested by Marit and what does she order… a coke-zero. okay but low-key she kinda based for that one. lol. Most of us either shared or ordered an individual pizza. Although not the most quality pizza ever eaten, the vibes were up from the whole group. The happier the math squad was, the happier I was.

After a delicious dinner, many continued the night. Some went to bed, some went to watch Netflix, and others and me partied till the night came to a close. My final picture is me and Megan singing “Golden” from K-pop demon hunters, a personal favorite of mine.

From a morning happy birthday serenade, to hits like My Way - Frank Sinatraa, Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash,  Creep - Radiohead, the bartender belting Take Me to Church and ending the night with Let It Be, I will say I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday with a new group of Oles that I have gotten to know over the past couple weeks. Despite a little unserious (and hopefully funny) blogging, shoutout to everyone here! Lots of love to MATH 257. That’s it from me. Perchance.

- Isaac :)

  1. What a phenomenal birthday, Isaac! This is quite the post you wrote and it made me laugh multiple times. If you don't make it as a mathematician, I think writing is in your future.
